Top Ten Posts (as of March 2014)

Posted on by

NoirJNL-01It’s been a while since I’ve taken a look at my stats. Today, I decided to peek.

Looking at shorter time scales, of course, the stats are dominated by things I’ve posted on relatively recent viral stories, like the Shia LaBeouf plagiarism debacle, Voyager “leaving” the solar system, the Ender’s Game boycott, and Abrams taking the helm of Star Wars. But, taking the long view, I was surprised to find readers still racking hits on some of the older stories.

Here are my All-Time Top Ten regular posts (i.e., not category pages, “About,” etc.) just for curiosity’s sake, in countdown format. It’s a good mix of writing advice, commentary, reviews, and civil design ideas.

10. “Five Songs That Should Be Made Into Movies” – 12 May 11
9. “One America : A New Vision For US Rail” – 08 Feb 13
8. “Four Approaches To Female Characters In Historical Fiction and Fantasy” – 01 Jul 11
7. “Historical Fiction Resources On The Longhouse” – 23 Nov 10
6. “Review : True Grit” (book and film) – 23 Jan 11
5. “Optimizing The DC Metro” – 22 Jun 12
4. “How MFA Programs Can Hurt Literature” – 02 Sep 10

Having a long think

Posted on by

CharlieBrownOptimismI’m out on a Saturday night, after having a long conversation with author John Austin, whose non-fiction short, “Planet Zero,” is now available in the critically acclaimed anthology Salaam Love: American Muslim Men on Love, Sex, and Intimacy.

The rest of the evening will be spent typing up some posts, which I will schedule for publication throughout the coming week.

Some thoughts that are buzzing through my head: Continue reading

Fans Should Come out of the Closet

OTHOAP-2d-ed-iconIn case you didn’t know, “coming out” is a concept from LGBT culture referring to the transition from hiding one’s sexual orientation to proclaiming it in public. Coming out has become a widespread idea, even beyond the LGBT community. For example, Wiccans jokingly talk about “coming out of the broom closet” when they tell their friends and family of their religion.

Someone who’d read On the Head of a Pin [Kindle | Nook] (whom I’ll call Rob because he/she requested anonymity) emailed me recently to ask if it was a sort of “coming out” story.

Things I Have (And Don’t Have) In Common With Neil Gaiman

Posted on by

jnl-comicThere’s a Buzzfeed list swinging around the internet (that phrase is so going to catch on) about bestselling author Neil Gaiman and the “14 Things You Don’t Know” about him.

I was surprised to find that the very first item on the list was an obscure food we both love.

So, in the interest of seeking similarities, here’s his list compared to me.

The Leith Push Strikes Again!

NoirJNL-01Some of you may remember how I featured author Mandy Morgan a while before she was a success, and how I gave Rahul Kanakia a great review before he was featured in the Diverse Energies anthology. I am always overjoyed (what a weird idea… over-joy?) to discover new talent!

But today I learned that I actually helped new talent. Continue reading

To Wake, Perchance to Dream

The other night I was at a P!nk concert.  Through the buzz of the audience, guitars and synthesized strings began a slow, tender chord progression. There was something intriguingly familiar about the way the electric guitar was sliding around the chords as the bass covered the transitions.  Then, P!nk leaned into the mike, parted her lips, and sadly crooned:

“It’s been a mystery, but still we try to see why something good can hurt so bad.”

It was a remake of Journey’s Who’s Crying Now, and the crowd immediately broke into a roar.  I distinctly remember the entire song: the original piano reworked for a gently distorted guitar, the percussion rolling through the verses after the intro (unlike in the original where they drop in and out), P!nk’s gorgeously gravelly voice hitting every emotional punch of the lyrics and even the way it accidentally cut out during the bridge as she sang, “Your looo–oove … will never die.”

It was a complete multi-layered vision, and I’m able to remember it as I type this as vividly as if it had been a real, waking experience.

Oh, didn’t I mention?  This was all a dream.

The Latest Book Score

Last week, during my son Jack’s visit, we spent a lot of time in bookstores.

I grudgingly admit to scouring the wastelands of Borders for carrion (as I’ve done before) but we also visited a few bookstores at historic sites like Gettysburg and Harper’s Ferry.  Below is my latest book score, and my newest reading list:
