First Two Pirates Episodes Moved Now Their Own Pages

Posted on by

pirate-JNLWhen I began the “experiment in the bare bones of storytelling” that spawned the notional Pirates of the Caribbean sequel trilogy, I expected the second and third installments to be cursory follow-ups to the first episode, The Eye of the Wind.

But, as I fleshed out Cat o’ Nine Tails and True Colours, I realized that even these tent-pole sketches merited closer treatment. Eventually, I decided to move the sketches themselves to pages, so they would be accessible from the face of the website. The main page is here.

Now, you can find them in the menus above, under Fiction. The final installment will be posted soon!

Optimizing the DC Metro

Posted on by

design Being somewhat unimpressed with WMATA’s half-hearted “Rush+” program to improve Metro service, I dusted off my old idea for a Beltway Line.

My take is that much of the crowding downtown is due to Metro riders having no way to go around the downtown hub area.  For example if you live in Silver Spring and want to Metro to Bethesda, just a stone’s throw to the east, you have to go all the way through Chinatown first.  Several proposed updates to the Metro, including the Purple Line and the separated Blue Line, are intended to provide riders alternatives to this in-and-out approach.  Continue reading

What Has J Been Reading? [Vespasian’s Birthday, 17 Nov 11]

After my brief detour through Charles Bukowski‘s Pulp, I am back into Raymond Chandler‘s anthology, The Simple Art of Murder.  Specifically, the short story “Pickup On Noon Street.”  Lots of archaic racial stereotypes, so I am waiting to see if the story rolls into some redeeming qualities.

In science news, Jupiter’s moon Europa is believed to have shallow subsurface lakes that connect to the deeper moon-wide ocean.  Hard sci-fi writers … On your mark! Get set!

On the writing front: Continue reading

What Has J Been Reading? [All Souls Day, 02 Nov 11]

Tea, Robot?” by Nathaniel Tapley, concerning the middle-class Englishman in sci-fi, and “Wedging the Door Open: Discussing the Weird” by Jeremy L. C. Jones (with quotes from authors too many to list) at Clarkesworld magazine.

Also, the submission guidelines at Clarkesworld magazine, which lists “talking cats” as the 3rd item on its hard sell list.  This makes me want to submit “Reading Cats” to Clarkesworld, just to be obnoxious.

Fortune smiles on the Page 56 Line 5 Game

Posted on by

Anyone who has ever spent more than a week on a social media site (which used to mean one of several places, but now pretty much means Facebook) has encountered the Page-56-Line-5 Game.

The game goes like this:

Open the book closest to you (not your favorite!) to page 56.  Copy line 5 from that page as your status, and explain the rules in a comment.  No cheating!

Typically this results in a forgettable, unidentifiable line even in the most well-written and easily recognizable work.  But, the other day luck was with me when the 56-5 Game reared its hackneyed head.

Brick and Mortar Carrion

Today I set out for DC’s King Library to buy a few books in their used bookstore.

Now, I know this is generally a No-No, but the books I buy are almost always older and obscure academic books that are either out-of-print or would never blip my radar unless I stumbled across them at a library sale or used book store.  So, technically there’s no replacement factor; the authors aren’t being robbed of royalties they would otherwise receive.

But, unknown to me when I set out, the King Library store is only open on weekdays.  Undaunted, I decided to walk down the street toward the White House, a few blocks east of which is a Borders®.

Publishing Links – Fight Writing, Octopus, and the Language of Lust

Another week, another round-up.  Or roll.  Or soup.  Whatever you like to call it.

Sadly, many publishing pro blogs are suffering the same summar blahs that have afflicted the lit agent blogs.  (*Knock Knock* Mr. RinzlerMs. Kroszer?  Are you okay in there?)  But, I still have plenty of intriguing stuff for you to check out!

So, let’s get right to the publishing pro links: Continue reading

Lit Agent Links – The Racist, The Unrootable, and The Unpublishable

Posted on by

I am considering combining the weekly lit agent round-up with the “miscellaneous” publishing pros.

Between the blogs that inexplicably dry up — or consist mainly of their own link lists, Happy Release Day posts, or “everyone can be a writer, don’t give up!” cheerleading — the lit agent offerings have been growing thin.  Maybe it’s because of this god-awful heat!  What’s the summer version of hibernation?

On to the lit agent links! Continue reading
